Ullapool & Area
The highlands of Scotland are regarded by many as one of the best and
unspoilt locations for nature, scenery and environment. Surrounding Ullapool are
magnificent mountains, glens, forest and moors. The coast line and sea are both
breathtaking and inspiring, and the Summer Isles and Hebrides are a boat trip
away.
Ullapool is an historical fishing port that has welcomed visitors for
hundreds of years. Remnants of the Iron Age communities and forts are still to
be found along the coast and in the hills. The Vikings have left their influence
in many of the names still used today. The modern day village as we know it was
designed in 1788 by Thomas Telford, due to the influence of the herring
fisheries in the waters around us. The mackerel industry saw the 'Klondyke'
industry dominate the port and region throughout the 80s and into the 90s, and
still today fishing place an important role from local prawn fishermen, white
fish boats from the east coast and European vessels that all land and refuel
here - within site of the flat.
We are also a popular destination for cruise liners, tall ships, yachts and
recreational boats. The harbour is the main ferry link to Lewis and local tour
boats sail to the Summer Isles throughout the summer.
Our location provides an ideal base for exploring the region. North, the
communities of Coigach and Assynt provide great days out. The geo-park and
mountain ranges are famed for the geology, climbing, walking and scenery.
South, Gairloch, Inverewe Gardens, Corrieshalloch Falls and Skye are all
destinations worth visiting.
The village itself has all modern facilities including shops, garages,
medical centres and sports centre. The local bars provide great food and
atmosphere and many put on live music in the evenings, catering for all tastes.
Location
An hour north of Inverness, we are easy to reach. Inverness is well linked by
air and rail from all over the UK, and hire cars are available in Inverness.
There is a twice daily bus between Ullapool and Inverness that operate with the
ferry to Lewis, timetables for which are available from the Ferry Terminal or
on the CalMac website.
We are situated on the front street of Ullapool, providing easy access, on street
parking, and ideal location for exploring the village and beyond.
